History of Sisters Surviving Cancer
Founded in 1995 by two breast cancer survivors, Dr. Rose Duhon-Sells and Sharon Waters-Mallet, Sisters Surviving Cancer was created to provide a safe and supportive space for African American women navigating life after a breast cancer diagnosis.
The group held its first official meeting on October 14, 1997, at the former Foreman-Reynaud YMCA, with eight women courageously sharing their experiences: Dr. Rose Duhon-Sells, Mrs. Sharon Waters-Mallet, Ms. Jackie Robertson, Mrs. Enola Matthews-Robertson, Ms. Loretta Harris, Mrs. Carolyn Frank, Mrs. Myrtle Thiery, and Mrs. Marva Ganes-Matthews. From those humble beginnings, the circle of support quickly grew to more than one hundred members. The following month, Mrs. Sharon Waters-Mallet invited Rev. Dr. Cynthia Sympson to join as the organization’s Spiritual Advisor, further strengthening the group’s foundation of faith and encouragement.
By 1997–1998, the organization expanded its mission to welcome men and individuals facing all types of cancer. Over the past 28 years, Sisters Surviving Cancer has served more than 500 members, remaining a steadfast source of strength, education, and hope for the community.
